ADVANCED LEVEL: Pouring Melt & Pour Soap in Layers (Part 1)

Pouring Soap Layers- Part 1 of 3

This is the first in a melt and pour soap making mini-series on using layered soap as embeds. Part 1 shows how to pour multiple layers of colored soap. The creative possibilites are endless. Part 2 of the mini-series will show how the layered soap can be used to create some really awesome looking soaps. Part 3 shows how to make soaps using slices of layered embeds.

Here's what you need:

  • Mold Market square loaf mold (this mold holds 2 to 2 1/2 pounds of soap)

  • White & Clear soap base

  • Neon Pink liquid gel soap color

  • Soap fragrance (optional). If desired, you can fragrance the heart shaped soaps.

  • Microwave / glass measuring cup

  • Pipette for dispensing fragrance

  • Rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. This helps to remove air bubbles on soap surface.

  • Digital scale to measure soap base

GETTING STARTED

Step One

Step One

Measure soap, cut into cubes and place in glass measuring cup. Melt in microwave in short 30 second bursts. Do not overheat. We started with a uncolored white soap base.

Step Two

Step 2

Slowly pour first layer into the square loaf mold. Our layers are approximately 3/8 inches deep. Spray this soap layer with rubbing alcohol to remove any surface air bubbles. Allow this layer of soap to set up until a thin skin forms on top surface.

Step Three

Melt a second batch of soap in microwave. Color with a contrasting soap dye. We used Neon Pink in clear soap base.

Step 4

Step Four

Adding fragrance oil is optional. We recommend using 2 to 3 teapsoons per pound of soap base.

Step Five

Step 5

Spray liberally with rubbing alcohol before pouring each soap layer. This helps soap layers to adhere to each other.

Step 5

After pouring the layer, spritz with rubbing alcohol to remove surface air bubbles.

Step Six

Allow soap to set upcompletely before removing from mold. Using a sharp chef's knife, slice the heart soaps lengthwise into 3 to 4 sections.

Step 6

Carefully pour next alternating soap layer. You want to ALWAYS be sure there is a thin soap skin on the top of previously poured layer. You don't want the next colored layer to puncture the previous layer.

Step Seven

Repeat the process, alternating colors. Allow soap to set overnight before removing from mold.

Use a large chef's knife or double-handled soap knife to slice soap into bars or to use as soap embeds. We will be using our layered soap for an embed project. Move onto Part 2 to see how we will uses this layered loaf.
